Communal Spaces and Vertical Living

Dharini articulates an idea of ‘Communal Spaces’ as a part of the Housing blocks she is designing. In order to get a hang of it, she studies three architectural projects that manifest the idea of communal spaces in terms of organisation principles, ratios of public and private areas and the connectivity that each of them offers.

Mid Semester Design Review – Moritz

After laying down the guidelines for Redevelopment of Shashtrinagar, Moritz designs the first phase of the site – the open ground – and arranges the built forms around its periphery. As a part of the Mid-Semester review, he presents design development of one of the housing blocks.

Forming the Master Plan

After studying two architectural projects (Interlace by OMA & Future Towers by MVRDV), Nakul uses similar strategies to lay down the cores and housing units on the site area of Shashtrinagar. Since, he is working on mixed-income housing (affordable and High-End), he segregates common areas and amenities by allowing accessibility based on subscription and/or membership.

Case Study – Commercial Complexes in Ahmedabad

In order to understand the space-making vocabulary of Commercial Complexes, Avesh examines selected Commercial buildings of Ahmedabad. He identifies pros and cons associated with the different types of Spatial Organisation found in the way Complexes are designed. He studies the manner in which the buildings get integrated with the ground as well as the car parking layouts and the experience of open spaces with the Complex area.

Further articulating the Guidelines

Nicola and Moritz further work out the strategies by detailing out the guidelines for infrastructure and waste management in Shashtrinagar. They also present models for street design of the site.

Shashtrinagar turns Agrarian

Katarina develops her initial concept of aqua-phonic garden society using diagrams, and later turning them into a masterplan for Shashtrinagar. She details out the number of residents and the heights of the blocks along the course of this exercise.

Home for All – Rabaris, Marwaris, Engineers and Teachers.

After deciding to build a troop of cooperative societies on the Shashtrinagar land, Dharini calculates the salaries of various potential groups of people that she could accommodate on the site as a part of the housing. She estimates their savings, the cost of a single house for a member of the respective group and balances it with the total number of possible houses for one particular society.

Phasing Shashtrinagar

Nakul in his fifth week begins to work out strategies for the construction phasing of Shashtrinagar. He calculates keeping in mind the intention of using less time to construct and jotting down optimal number of construction phases which allow for less number of residents to shift out of Shashtrinagar, during the on-going construction so as to avoid rental expenditure and at the same time allow intake of more number of residents once a particular phase is constructed.

Live-Work Environments for Informal Markets

Tanvi decides to adopt the role of Government to design affordable housing in Shashtrinagar. She identifies the issues associated with the informal markets in the city and decides to provide work spaces within her designed dwelling environments in order to boost the economy informal markets.

Community building over the decade

Moritz and Nicola decide to transform Shashtrinagar over a period of time. In order to so, they lay down guidelines for any further construction in Shashtrinagar. The guidelines, if followed correctly, according Moritz and Nicola, will strengthen the sense of community amongst the citizens of Shashtrinagar.

Understanding Scale

After deciding his role as a Private Housing Developer with government partnership, Nakul begins to explore the scale of the site by placing several other large-scale housing projects (Interlace, 8-House, Star Apartments, Horizontal Skyscraper) within the site area of Shashtrinagar.

‘Economics’ and ‘Politics’ in my neighbourhood

Dharini observes economics and politics of space making in the context of her own neighbourhood using parameters such as types of houses, accessibility to the entrance, openness, accessibility to the common ground and road network connectivity.
